Fight cold and flu season

Colder weather ushers in new and old strains of respiratory viruses.  But parents can help a child fight the cold and flu season with a few simple precautions.

Remind your child to take the following precautions to avoid spreading germs and contracting illnesses:

  • Wash hands frequently.
  • Use tissue to rub the eyes, nose and mouth and avoid using hands.
  • Cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Quickly discard used tissues
  • Flu vaccine.

Aspirin should not be given to flu patients due to the increased risk of developing Reye syndrome.  Parents should seek medical attention when a child develops a persistent cough that keeps him awake or causes discomfort.
